  25. 1. INTRODUCTION
  26.  
  27.    True Type Font Installer (TTInstal) was created to provide one major
  28.    feature that is lacking from the font installation feature of the
  29.    Microsoft Windows 3.1 Control Panel: mainly the ability to preview
  30.    fonts before they are installed.  Along the way, some other features
  31.    ended up in the program and more may be added as time goes by.

  34. 2. TTINSTAL FEATURES

  36.  - Previews TrueType fonts before they are installed

  40.  - Supports compressed TrueType font files (those that use Microsoft-standard
  41.    compression with the standard .TT_ file extension, such as used on the
  42.    Microsoft True Type Font Pack for Windows)

  57. 3. INSTRUCTIONS
  58.  
  59.  - Previewing Fonts
  60.  
  61.    Use the drive, directory and file list boxes to select a given TrueType
  62.    font.  Hit the Preview button to preview that font.
  63.    
  64.    Preview Indicators
  65.    
  66.       While a font is being previewed, the font name (e.g. "Helvetica Bold"
  67.       will appear in the Font Name box.  The font filename (e.g. "helvb.ttf")
  68.       is shown in the Filename box, and the actual preview of the font may
  69.       be seen in the Font Preview box.

  71.    Selecting Font Preview Size
  72.  
  73.       The desired font preview size in points may be selected via the Size
  74.       drop-down selector.
  75.  
  76.    Special Preview Indicators
  77.  
  78.       In the blank space directly beneath the preview Size selector may appear
  79.       a font status indicator.  This indicator will read "Installed" if
  80.       TTINstal detects that the currently previewed font is installed.  It may
  81.       also read "Existing Metrics" if for some reason a scalable font metric
  82.       resource file (.FOT) happens to exist for the currently previewed font,
  83.       but the font is not currently installed in Windows (an unusual case).

  85.  - Installing Fonts
  86.  
  87.    While a font is being previewed, pressing the Install button will
  88.    install that font into your Windows configuration.

  90.    Copy to Windows Directory Option   
  91.    
  92.       When you press the Install button, if the "Copy to Windows Directory"
  93.       option has been checked, TTInstal will also copy the font to your
  94.       Windows SYSTEM subdirectory.

  96.  - Removing Fonts
  97.  
  98.    Pressing the Remove... button will give you the option of removing the
  99.    font from the WIN.INI and memory, deleting the scalable resource file
  100.    (.FOT) from disk, or deleting the TrueType font file (.TTF) file itself
  101.    from disk.  Naturally, caution should be exercised when deleting such
  102.    files.  TTInstal will ask you to confirm deletion of TrueType font files.

  104.  - Viewing Currently Installed Fonts
  105.  
  106.    Press the Installed Fonts... button to produce a dialog box that will
  107.    allow you to view the currently installed fonts at any desired size.
  108.  
  109.    Note that if you are currently previewing a font at the time you press
  110.    the Installed Fonts... button, that font will show up in the Installed 
  111.    Fonts dialog, since it is being displayed by TTInstal at the time.

  113.  - Printing Font Specimen Sheets
  114.  
  115.    While a font is being previewed, you can print a font specimen sheet
  116.    by pressing the Print button.  Specimen sheets show the font character
  117.    set from characters 32-255 in a 24-point size, and include character
  118.    codes underneath each character.

  122.    Press the Close button to shut down TTInstal.

  125. 4. ADVANCED INI SETTINGS
  126.  
  127.    True Type Font Installer creates and uses an initialization textfile
  128.    called TTINSTAL.INI.  Setting incorrect values in this file can cause
  129.    problems, and modifying it is rarely necessary, so this section is
  130.    recommended for advanced users only.  In this section, items within
  131.    the <> signs, e.g. "<option>", indicate optional parameters.
  132.  
  133.    The INI settings in the [TTInstal] section are as follows:
  134.  
  135.    PreviewText=<text>
  136.  
  137.       This option allows you to set the text that will be used for the sample
  138.       when a font is previewed.  The default is "AaBbCcDdEeFf" (without the
  139.       quotes).  Example:
  140.  
  141.          PreviewText=My Preview Text
  142.    
  143.    PreviewSize=<integer>
  144.  
  145.       This option specifies the size in points that will be used for font
  146.       preview.  You don't need to set this option manually.  It's set
  147.       automatically by TTInstal to the current value each time you exit the
  148.       program.  Example:
  149.  
  150.          PreviewSize=24
  151.  
  152.       The valid range for PreviewSize is 2 through 127.
  153.  
  154.    PreviewPath=<drive/path>
  155.  
  156.       This option is used by TTInstal to save the current drive and path
  157.       upon exit.  When you restart TTInstal, it will start up in the same
  158.       directory you were in when you quit.  There is little reason to modify
  159.       this parameter manually.  A fully qualified drive/path is required,
  160.       including the drive letter and colon.  Example:
  161.  
  162.          PreviewPath=S:\NETFONTS\TRUETYPE\SERIF
  163.  
  164.    SpecimenTitleFont=<font name>
  165.  
  166.       This option is used to specify the font face name that will be used
  167.       for the titles (font names) at the top of each font specimen sheet
  168.       printout.  The default is Arial.  You will need to change this if
  169.       you do not have Arial installed for some reason, or if you just want
  170.       to use a different font.  This parameter can only be changed by
  171.       editing the TTINSTAL.INI.  Example:

  173.          SpecimenTitleFont=Lucida Handwriting Italic
  174.  
  175.    SpecimenSize=<integer>
  176.  
  177.       This option sets the font size in points that will be used for the
  178.       character samples on font specimen sheet printouts.  The default is
  179.       24 points.  You may need to reduce this number on some exotic fonts
  180.       that have unusual character extents, such as some math character set
  181.       fonts.  This parameter can only be changed by editing the TTINSTAL.INI.

  186.       You can tell if this setting is too high, because the font specimen      
  187.       sheets will not print correctly!  Again this will only happen in rare
  188.       cases with very exotic fonts.

  237.    xx is a two-digit indication of the version number, e.g. TTI14.ZIP for
  238.    version 1.40.
